‘The only positive from that is he came off very early — the moment he felt something’
However, the joy of the three points was somewhat diminished by the 29th minute substitution of Dutch wing back Patrick van Aanholt due to an apparent hamstring injury.
Some FPL managers will be equally concerned, given the Palace wing-back is currently selected by 10.3 per cent of all managers due to his attacking attributes – he’s scored two goals this campaign.
The Dutchman has an upcoming Saturday fixture at Vicarage Road against Watford, and will be hoping to make a swift recovery for the game.
Here is the latest on the defender.
How bad is Van Aanholt’s injury?
Speaking after the match, Palace manager Hodgson said: “The only positive from that is he came off very early – the moment he felt something. He didn’t think he’d actually torn in away way but he definitely felt something in the hamstring, and came off straight away.
“He’ll have treatment, of course, tomorrow and on Thursday, he’ll probably have a scan. We just have to wait and hope we can get him back quickly. But he certainly wasn’t under the impression himself that ‘that’s me out for a number of weeks’. But until we’ve had the scan, until the doctor’s had a really good chance to have a look at him we won’t know. Again, Thursday will tell me more.”
Taking a knock in the Burnley game prior too, Van Aanholt may need some time to recover – especially given hamstring injuries usually require some sensitivity. It’s likely he will miss the midweek game, and with Martin Kelly due to make a return to action, he could fill in for a couple of gameweeks to allow Van Aanholt to get back to full fitness.
Should I take Van Aanholt out of my FPL team?
Given Van Aanholt costs £5.6m, yes. Not least because his form does not warrant a place in your lineup and there are better options. Jetro Willems is a cool £1.0m cheaper and is in better form, while Lewis Dunk is as cheap as Willems and has two assists more than van Aanholt while matching his goal tally.
While Crystal Palace’s run of games is very favourable (Watford, Brighton, Newcastle, West Ham, Southampton), there is another option among Palace defenders. Martin Kelly may be back for a run in the side and costs only £4.1m, giving you £1.5m to splash elsewhere.
Given the Englishmen returns around the same points tally, it may be prudent to downgrade the Dutchman to upgrade elsewhere in your squad.
